The Gospel in the Gray Areas (1 Corinthians, Part 3)
Review the sermon from Sunday. What was the big idea? What stood out to you?
Read v. 16-17. How could we summarize Paul’s understanding of communion? How does this challenge your understanding of and participation in it week-to-week?
Read v. 19-20. Paul warns that idolatry bonds us with evil forces. This may sound otherworldly, but can you think of examples today where people may unknowingly be dabbling in idolatry? (Don’t settle for the “obvious” answers here; try to go deeper!)
Read v. 21-22. Paul says that worshipping Christ and engaging with idols are fundamentally incompatible. What does it mean to “provoke the Lord to jealousy”?
Recap what Collin said about acknowledging whose table you’re sitting at. What “tables” we are often tempted to sit at in our culture? How can we identify when we are doing this?
Circle back and read v. 14-15. What does it look like in our time to “flee from idolatry?” Can you think of any real-world scenarios or examples where this charge would apply?
How can a fuller appreciation of the Lord’s Table help you flee from idolatry? What can you do to deepen your participation in that form of worship each week?
Pray for one another that God would reveal areas of compromise in you and renew your sense of unity with Christ.
