Come Together: Unity in the Church

  • Review the sermon from Sunday. What was the big idea? What stood out to you?

  • Read 1 Corinthians 1:18-25. Collin summed up Paul’s point with the title “Logic of the Cross.” What did Collin mean by that? Do you think that is a good title? Why or why not?

  • Try to imagine what it would be like to be a first century Roman and to hear that the God of the Christians died on a cross. How would that reaction be different from people’s reaction to the cross today? What should we learn from that?

  • Read 1 Corinthians 1:26-31. In these verses, Paul applies the logic of the cross to the community. How does he do it? What are the components of “Gospel character” that we see in these verses?

  • How can we build the kind of community that Paul is describing on both a macro level (corporate worship) and on a micro level (small groups and households)?

  • Read 1 Corinthians 2:1-5. In these verses, Paul applies the logic of the cross to the church’s proclamation. What lesson can we take away for how churches are to preach the Gospel?

  • Most will not be called to public proclamation of the Gospel from a pulpit. So how are we called to proclaim the Gospel? What opportunities do you specifically have to proclaim it?

  • Take some time to pray for the logic of the cross to take its full effect in Southside’s community and proclamation.
