Yet I Will Rejoice: A Study in Habakkuk

  • Review the sermon from Sunday. What was the big idea? Was there a specific insight or illustration that stood out to you

  • Read Habakkuk 1:1-4. This lament was in response to widespread oppression and injustice in the kingdom of Judah. What injustices or suffering could lead us to make similar complaints or cries to God?

  • How is biblical lament different from unbridled anger or unchecked rage toward God? How can we practice the former without falling into the latter?

  • Why do we sometimes struggle to be authentic in our prayers and worship? How could lament help us to bring the “real I” before the Lord?

  • Why should we be authentic in our interactions with God? What is the danger of pretension in prayer and worship?

  • In what way could lament help us not to put God in a box or create him in our own image?

  • Think of a time that your experience of God did not matching your knowledge of God. What was that like? How did you overcome it? What practices, prayers, scriptures, or other means helped you?

  • Try praying a lament to God: bear your sorrows and complaints before him. Strive to maintain both authenticity (don’t make things up, be honest about what is bothering you) and faith (place your trust in God to help you).
